Mark and Doug’s Wonderful Island Tour

Club members are invited to join Doug and Mark for their annual Island Tour to Put-in-Bay, Ohio on Saturday, August 6. The tour promises to be something special this year with a poker run rally, a barbeque and a visit to a local resident's vintage car collection.

We will assemble at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, at the Pilot gas station at Nadeau Road and I-75 near Monroe. After refueling LBCs and participants we will depart promptly at 6:30 a.m. We will caravan into Ohio and travel along Route #2 which borders Lake Erie. The distance from the Pilot gas station to the Miller Ferry dock at Catawba Island is about 70 miles. We hope to board all DTSC members and their vehicles on one ferry boat which will carry us to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, Ohio.

Once on Put-in-Bay we will caravan to the park at Perry's Cave. At the park we will join up with Doug and Patty Cook who will arrive the previous day. The club has the park reserved for the day. Also located at the park is the Put-in-Bay automobile Museum and the 6,000 square foot Island Butterfly House.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. the first car will depart the park for Doug's Poker Run. Contestants will receive playing cards as they tour around the island visiting various locations. Each contestant will receive five cards on their tour. The best poker hand will be rewarded with a prize.

Following the poker run a barbeque will be offered at the park. DTSC'rs are urged to bring their own beverages. Hot dogs and condiments will be provided.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. we will caravan to the home of Bill White, a seasonal Put-in-Bay resident, for a tour of his garages. Bill is a car collector and keeps many of his beautiful cars at his home on Put-in-Bay. Although his collection is mostly comprised of Fords, Mercurys and Chevrolets of the 1940s and 1950s he does own a MGTF roadster.

Following our tour of Bill White's car collection we will gather again at the park to announce the winner of the poker run and finish off any uneaten hot dogs before departing for the Miller Ferry dock for the return trip to the mainland. The Miller Ferry representatives urge us to be in line for the departing ferry boat by 4:30 p.m.

For anyone who has never visited Put-in-Bay the island is an interesting and historic location. Long known as the home base of the U.S. naval forces under command of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who defeated the British naval forces under command of Commodore Robert Barclay during the War of 1812 near Put-in-Bay, the island today is best known as a haven for college students, boaters and fishermen during the warmer months.
